Organic Lawn Care Project

Rockwood Agribusiness - A Local Source for Compost

On June 24, Sasha Amaya and Maya Thau-Eleff, the two Organic Lawn Care educators for the Manitoba Eco-Network this summer, went to visit Rockwood Agribusiness' Compost and Recycling facilities. Rockwood Agribusiness partners with Corrections Canada to run initiatives such as their composting program. This program partners with Safeway, as well as Palliser Furniture, to create an abundance of compost that can be used as an organic amendment for your whole lawn. Many people already compost in their own back yards, but these backyard composters often don't yield enough "black gold" for use on a whole turf yard. Rockwood Agribusiness provides cheap and all-organic (non-sprayed) compost, that can be used as topsoil on lawns or in flower beds. And, in the process, they help divert around 20, 000 pounds of organic waste from Safeways across the city that would otherwise end up in the landfill, and sawdust from Palliser Furniture which provides the "brown" component of the compost and helps the "green" (food waste, grass clippings) matter break down. The site is impressive, with many windrows of compost set up, and a large screening machine. The result? Great, nurtrient-rich soil amendments for only $2.50/ 50 lb bag or $12/yard.

Rockwood Agribusiness asks that you please call before you come. Their hours for compost pick-up are Monday to Friday, 9-11 AM and 1-3 PM. The program's phone number is: (204) 344-5111 ext. 8472
