GIS/Mapping Centre

The mandate of the Manitoba Eco-Network’s GIS / Mapping Centre is to provide the benefits of Geographic Information Systems (GIS) technologies to Manitoba’s Environmental Non-Governmental Organization (ENGO) community and other interested institutions. Our services include the following:

Custom maps: We can establish thematic maps of a specified area that can be included in a report, presentation, poster, website, etc. These can be provided in printed and digital format.

Posters: We custom-design and assist in the printing of posters (printing currently sub-contracted to the University of Winnipeg).

Geospatial Analysis: For example, using GIS technology it is easy to retrieve information, such as the total length of rivers, roads, etc., the amount of land covered by a certain land-use, or the number of objects, such as hog barns within a defined distance to a town or farm site.

Database Management / Geographic Information Systems: We can create complete databases and GISs for a project; these house all relevant geographical data in map and/or tabular format and provide a base for easy data access, manipulation, retrieval and management.

Interactive DVDs or CD-ROMs: Applications and designs vary greatly. For example, we can use a base map and users can view pictures or videos of features on the map by the click of a mouse button – or the click of a mouse button will reveal tabular or graphic statistics of that feature, such as water quality data along a river. – These kinds of products are especially useful for educational purposes.

3D Visualization / Analysis: These techniques extend mapping beyond the traditional two dimensional surfaces and enhance our understanding of space and place.

Workshops: Since the establishment of the GIS / Mapping Centre, we have offered introductory hands-on Global Positioning System (GPS) workshops on an annual basis. Workshop participants learn about the principles of GPS technology and get hands-on mapping experience in the field.      GIS workshops introduce participants to the basics of GIS techniques and also provide hands-on experience. All workshops can be offered on demand and can be adjusted to suit participants’ needs.

Equipment Rental: Lease our GPS unit for your mapping and research needs.

Project Management: We establish partnerships in which we can take a leading role in the project design and implementation.

We are happy to provide our services during any stage of your project, from assistance in the proposal stage, over data management during a project, to the provision of CDs, DVDs, maps and posters that show your results towards the end of the project. In addition, we can establish partnerships in which we take a leading role in the project design and implementation.
