The Manitoba Eco-Network's GIS/Mapping Centre began working on the development of a new canoe map for the Manigotagan River in 2006. One of our reasons for becoming involved was that the downstream portion of the river was given provincial park status in December of 2004 and critics had identified a number of concerns about environmental and social impacts associated with park status (and increased access to and interest in the river). Concerns included the potential of water contamination due to increased numbers of recreationalists and an increased risk of forest fires. In addition, potentially dangerous situations exist because the naming of whitewater along the Manigotagan River is inconsistent and varies by author. These potential impacts were exacerbated by dated canoe maps.
The goals of this project are to facilitate and promote environmentally sensitive use of the Manigotagan River and to raise awareness of its history and ecosystems. In collaboration with Manitoba Conservation's Parks Branch and in consultation with the community of Manigotagan, the Manitoba Eco-Network's GIS Centre established a website and two maps: a printed map, which is designed to be used for orientation in the field, and a digital interactive map, which will soon be available on this site.
The interactive map and website provide in-depth information about the area and the canoe trip. For example, we include printable descriptions of the rapids and the campsites along the Manigotagan River and the option to download GPS waypoints.
We hope that our maps and the website help to increase support for the protection of Manitoba's natural environment. If you wish to further your support, consider becoming a member of the Manitoba Eco-Network or donating to us and our projects.
